A Perfect Winter Itinerary in Clear Lake Country

Updated: Mar 7

It’s easy to picture a summer trip to Clear Lake. Hikes, beaches, shopping and dining are a few of the many things that attract people to this area. But if you’re not from here, you might wonder what the heck there is to do in winter in this beautiful but slightly tucked-away part of Manitoba.

If you love a balanced mix of outdoor fun and relaxation, there is surprisingly plenty to fill a long winter weekend without feeling rushed.

Clear Lake Country has increasingly become a winter destination. Over the last 10 years, more businesses are staying open year round, including Smokey Hollow, which used to close-up after high season. We are also seeing wonderful new additions like the amazing Klar So Spa.

This area has always been a haven for skiing, ice fishing, skating, tobogganing, and snowshoeing. The addition of the new nordic spa brings a level of comfort and luxury that makes for the perfect balanced getaway.

There is a new, youthful energy in the area that is hard to describe but easy to see. Groups like Clear Lake Country have done incredible work not only promoting the region, but collaborating with other businesses to create unique winter events in Riding Mountain National Park, including the Frost and Fire and Winter Adventure weekends. The result is winter experiences that are vibrant, unique, and worth checking out.

If you are someone like me who loves both the outdoors and a lot of chilling and relaxing, here is your ideal long weekend in Clear Lake Country.

Day 1

Arrive at Smokey Hollow.

Wanted something simple? So you booked one of our cozy motel-style rooms with a basic kitchenette.

Wanted more space and amenities? You booked the Cottage Suite or Kippan’s Cabin which offer beautiful rustic charm, sleep up to six, and have full kitchens so you can easily prepare a few simple meals.

Once you have settled in, book our private outdoor cedar sauna. Robes, towels, and a Bluetooth speaker are included. When you are ready, pour water over the rocks, breathe deep, and enjoy the steam and warmth.

End the night with your favourite drink and a good sleep.

Day 2

Activate coffee.

We provide coffee, sugar, and dry cream, but I highly recommend bringing fresh cream and maybe a splash of maple syrup or a creamy liqueur to doctor it up. So good.

All units include at least a small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. Hot tip. We keep extra toasters on hand. Just ask. Coffee, toast, yogurt. Done.

Adventure Time

Just 30 minutes away is Ski Valley, a family-run downhill ski park with 10 slopes and beautiful valley views. There is also a casual canteen-style restaurant. For our family, about five hours here is perfect. We offer Ski and Stay passes at Smokey Hollow so you can enjoy a discount!

Not into downhill skiing? No problem.

Riding Mountain National Park maintains fantastic groomed cross-country ski trails. Or spend time walking through the historic town of Wasagaming just minutes away. Bring skates to explore the skating paths and snow sculptures. You can also rent snowshoes from the Friends of the Park shop and explore one of the many nearby trails.

Evening Wind Down

Finish the day with a bonfire in our beautifully lit backyard. We provide firewood, pre-cut kindling, and firestarter so getting a fire going is easy-peasy.

Feeling youthful? Grab the tubes and slide down the path to the bonfire area. Nothing makes me happier than looking outside my office window and seeing adults of all ages laughing and flying down the hill.

Not in the mood to cook? Winter options are limited, but Lakehouse offers great food in a lovely setting and it’s located only minutes away. The Buffalo Bar at Elkhorn Resort also has a great menu.

Day 3

Repeat coffee.

After yesterday’s activity, today is about finding your zen at Klar So Spa. Smokey Hollow even offers a Spa + Stay package, so you can enjoy cozy accommodations and a full spa experience with ease.

At Klar So Spa, guests can enjoy steam rooms, a dry sauna, two hot pools, a temperate pool, and a cold plunge. There are cozy fireplaces, lounging areas, and an on-site restaurant that makes lunch easy and feel luxurious. Rotating between the different features, plus eating, I can easily spend five hours here. If you’re interested in any spa treatments, be sure to book those ahead!

What I suggest bringing:

  • A tuque. Keeping your head warm makes the pools comfortable even on the coldest days.

  • Slip-on sandals.

  • A water bottle or discreet thermos (wink!).

  • A magazine or book. I love stretching out on the heated loungers in the relaxation room with a book and making it a full-day experience.

Head back to your little home at Smokey Hollow, enjoy a simple meal, and tuck into bed with a movie. We have Smart TVs with hundreds of channels.

Day 4

One last coffee:)

You pre-booked a morning sauna session, so you get one more experience in our outdoor wood-fired sauna. It is spacious and private. The perfect way to soak in heat and steam before hitting the road.

Relaxed and balanced. Winter done right!
